Lovefilm’s game rental option has really taken off with a major expansion in 2007, featuring an unmatched 3,100 unique titles across seven gaming platforms, many more than most games-only companies out there. And if you want the odd DVD with your game rentals, then their unmatched catalogue of 65,000+ films makes them the top games-movie combo choice.

It wasn’t always this way, as Lovefilm debuted a games rental offering in 2005 with a smaller,Xbox and PS2 only offering, but by mid-2007 had completed their expansion and we noted more positive customer comments, so moved them to the number three slot in our chart in October.

The site is certainly easy to navigate. Games are easy to browse by console and then by genre within each console as well. They also include recommendations such as hot lists, most popular listings, all time favourites, new releases etc. Should you choose to rent DVDs too, you also have access to a vast range (65,000+ titles) and they also offer a movie download service.

Lovefilm are currently offering games for Xbox, Xbox 360, PS2, PSP, PS3, Wii, and Gamecube. They have a surprisingly large catalogue of 3,100 titles, equivalent to the big games-only rental companies, of which there are 1600+ game titles for PS2, 100+ for XBox 360, 100+ for the Wii, 700+ for XBox and 300+ for PSP, 400+ for the GameCube, and 80+ so far for the PS3.

As of early 2008, Lovefilm had relaunched their phone customer service line, open an impressive Monday to Friday, 8am to 8pm, and Saturday to Sunday, 9am to 4pm.

By including games in their DVD package at no extra cost they offer a very competitive deal for games rental, with the bonus of DVD rental, and a two week free trial. There were some customer service issues following the October 2006 merger of Lovefilm with rival Screenselect, though these have diminished over time.

From our own experience, we suggest, if it is games you are after more than DVDs, make a disproportionate amount of your wishlist games, and keep your wishlist short - effectively encouraging them to send games out rather than DVDs.

Prices: Lovefilm offer three unlimited price plans: 1 game/DVD at-a-time for £10.99. For 2 at-a-time and 3 at-a-time games/DVD rentals, Lovefilm charges £14.99 and £18.99 per month respectively.

It is possible (and unlike other companies, easy) to cancel within the free trial period. If you cancel sometime after subscribing, Lovefilm will likely contact you a few months down the line offering a “2 months for the price of 1″ deal if you come back. If you have used Lovefilm or any of their Lovefilm/Screenselect-powered DVD rental sites before, then it is unlikely that you will be eligible for a second go at their free trial.

Hi, im a customer of LOVEFILM. I’ve noticed you’ve written

‘From our own experience, we suggest, if it is games you are after more than DVDs, make a disproportionate amount of your wishlist games, and keep your wishlist short - effectively encouraging them to send games out rather than DVDs.’

You can actually make different lists and have them send out more discs from one list than another, i have the 3 DVD/Games at a time option, and what I’ve done is made a list for games, and assigned it to have 2 discs at a time, and a list for DVD’s, which sends me 1 at a time. In this way, whenever i get a package through the post from them, i get 1 DVD and 2 games.

You’ve also failed to mention that you can prioritise individual games, with a high/medium/low priority they try to send out what you want first.

This makes the service very efficient.

Also, i’ll just point out that i’ve had a number of problems with post getting lost in my area, and LOVEFILM have been incredibly helpful with that as well.

Got something to say?
